Description
I took this image with one hand while holding the wild chick in the other. He had been roughed up by a wild rooster and left on the ground dazed.I have rescued many of the wild chicks over the years as well as older roosters and hens. Some have been injured by cars, heat stroke, freezing weather, but never illness.
These descendants of the India Red Jungle Fowl have survived many things over the fifty years living in a small rural community in South Georgia. They are true survivors and the interesting thing is that these wild fowl survive without antibiotics, unlike domesticated chickens, which has become a topic of scientific interest in past years.sometimes a small chick ends up abandoned by the hen long enough to be attacked by a rooster.Usually they jerk them up by the wing. This chick was lucky and survived the attack. This print is recognition of a strong young survivor, wild and free, and the importance of preservation of wildlife. copyright Jan Gelders Photography
